Fall Semester 2023

Neurogenetics CURE lab (BIOL 4095 ST) – Fall semester

In this three credit lab course for biology majors, students will use of the neurogenetic toolbox exclusively available in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and design and run their own experiments to identify the function of a gene or neuron of their choice. The course alternates with the Neuroethology class.

Neuroethology (BIOL 4091 ST) – Fall semester

In this undergraduate course we will discuss how gene expression influences neurophysiology, how changes in neurophysiology mediate behavior and how these changes in behavior can impact an individual’s fitness and enables adaptations to the biotic an abiotic environment. The course consists of a combination of lectures, writing tasks, and an independent research project on sexual selection and attractiveness in humans. The course alternates with the Neurogenetics CURE lab.

Genetics (BIOL 3072) – Spring semester

In this mandatory three credit class, we will discuss the fundamental concepts of heredity, mendelian genetics, molecular genetics, gene regulation, microbial genetics, and population genetics and will discuss some novel and powerful genetic techniques such as the Gal4/UAS system, CRISPR, an NGS sequencing.

Research I/II (BIOL 4000/4001)

If you are interested in the ecology and behavior of insects, a research internship with up to 3 credits might be an excellent choice to collect hands-on research experience in my lab. I always have projects available for students.
