MEM-FLY

MEM-FLY is a local community research project investigating how differences in urban development impact insect behavior, physiology, and biodiversity. We compare under- and highly developed districts in Memphis, using Drosophila and ants as model organisms, and collaborate with citizen scientists to collect data. This work not only deepens our understanding of urban ecology but also promotes and community engagement.

Join us! MEM-FLY is a community-powered research project, and there are two main ways you can contribute.
First, you can host a sampling site — this means allowing us to place small insect traps in your yard or other outdoor space and to collect traps once or twice a week. We may also collect a few soil samples to analyze the pollution of soil e.g. with heavy metals and its effects on insects. It’s low-effort, non-invasive, and a great way to support science right where you live.

Second, you can run simple experiments with us. We provide everything you need: instructions, materials, and support. These experiments help us explore how insects respond to different environmental conditions, and they’re designed to be easy and fun — perfect for students and families with kids.

Whether you’re hosting traps or getting hands-on with experiments, your participation will directly support local research on how urban environments shape biodiversity, behavior, and environmental health.
